Youth Philanthropy Initiative Awards £3000 to Homelink Charity

Youth Philanthropy

During PSHEE and Citizenship lessons in the autumn term Year 9 students participated in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative, (YPI) on 16th January ‘09. YPI is an international programme designed to support young people in developing both community awareness and important employability skills. Students are taught about philanthropy and charity through a hands-on experience of giving that highlights the positive impact they can have on the community.

Students worked in teams to research the needs of our local community and identify a local charity they believed was best placed to make a positive change. They then learned how to analyse the charity’s management, budget, strategy, staffing arrangements and programmes. During this process, pupils also developed teamwork, communication and presentation skills as well as an awareness of the needs of their local community.
A number of groups were able to visit their chosen charity or invited representatives from the charities to visit the school for an interview. Many students developed a real understanding of some of the challenges facing the community and will, we hope, be inspired to work to change society for the better.
Following skills training in advocacy and public speaking, students used their research to make presentations on the reasons their chosen charity was most deserving of support. 12 teams were chosen to enter the semi final with 6 teams going through to the final.
The six teams of 30 students who had reached the finals, were judged on Friday 16th January. The team judged to have made the most compelling presentation was granted £3,000 by the YPI to award to their charity and the award went to Homelink. The 6 final teams presented in front of parents, representatives from the nominated charities, all other year 9 students & Emily Miller YPI Programme Associate. The teams represented the following:
Age Concern Hounslow
The Croft Centre – After school clubs for disabled children in Richmond
Homelink - supporting carers
Richmond Young Carers- for young people who care for a relative
Oaklands – Special Needs school
Shooting Star Hospice – Children’s Hospice
The judging panel included: Andrew Denton Sales & Marketing Director of CHP Consulting, Annie Hargreaves Adviser PSHEE/Healthy School /Anti bullying from Children’s Services for Hounslow, Sr. Brenda Wallace the Head Teacher of Gumley one of our Governors Sr. Kate Frost FCJ, Loredana Roberts Business & Enterprise Manager of Gumley, Head Girl Catriona Sibthrop and Head of School Council Helen Timpson.

“Gumley School deserves great credit for this initiative,” said judge Andrew Denton of CHP Consulting. “It took real teamwork to produce the sort of presentation that would make the final six, and the maturity and sales skills demonstrated by the presenters were very impressive.”
