Business advice from the experts

City H.R. Manager

In May Jo Lander, Human Resources Manager, from CHP Consulting Ltd, an ICT firm in the city, spent 3 hours with different groups of year 11 and year 12 students. She came to Gumley specifically to talk about her role as an H.R. Manager; her key responsibilities; how her role impacts on different aspects of CHP’s business and the type of qualifications needed to pursue this type of career.

Additionally she offered some valuable tips on constructing effective C.V.’s and job application letters, what interviewers look for and the mistakes to avoid. This was invaluable help to our students as they embark on work experience, university interviews and begin to contemplate the career choices available to them. To test students learning she created some really interesting tasks, providing them with mock application letters which they had to analyse and then feedback on; highlighting the critical and relevant information versus errors and unnecessary information.

This is what Jo Lander had to say:

"My morning spent at Gumley House School was a truly rewarding experience. My intention was to pass on some useful careers advice and practical recruitment tips and techniques. In reality I came away having learnt a few lessons myself from the students who were generous in their welcome and searching in their questions."
