4. Introduction
Established in 2003, TOBB University of Economics and Technology is a foundation-owned private university, located in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. TOBB, The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, is the main sponsor of the university. TOBB is the largest civilian economical organization in Turkey; it represents 362 chambers and commodity exchanges across Turkey with 1.2 million members. Three of the six departments of the university are ranked in the first five top universities in Turkey in the Central University Entrance Exam grades in 2004. University campus has state-of-the-art facilities with wireless Internet access all over the campus.
5. City
Ankara is the capital of Turkey. With a population of about 5 million people, Ankara is the second largest city of Turkey. Ankara serves as a center for opera, ballet, theaters, and concert halls. Ankara is the hub of all governmental activities with the Turkish Parliament, ministries, foreign embassies, international organizations. Ankara’s central location makes it very convenient for weekend trips to resorts, cultural and historical sites, and the seaside. Istanbul is five hours away by bus. Ankarais also a university town with more than 10 universities. Streets are filled with students of all ages. Shopping centers with movie theaters, food courts, restaurants, and many activities are conveniently located all around the city. Transportation in the city is very easy with many bus routes and an expanding subway system.
6. Accommodation
Student dormitories and a new state-of-the-art sports and recreation center are being built and to be completed by the summer of 2005 on ETU campus. Currently students stay in nearby student dormitories and university busses provide transportation to the campus.
7. Laboratories, Libraries, and Computing Services
University in its first year (2004-2005) immediately opened 2 physics, 1 chemistry, 1 electronics, 1 microprocessor/microcontroller, 1 heat and thermodynamics, 1 digital circuits and systems laboratories, and 2 computer labs. All ETU students, a total of 275 in the first year, are given a free laptop computer when they start the university. All classrooms and labs are wired for network access. All facilities are also equipped with wireless access to network and the Internet. Students can access the computer networks and Internet from everywhere in the campus. University library opened with an initial collection of 11 thousand books and many multimedia materials. Subscriptions to printed and electronic journals, books, and online databases are also provided. University students and visitors can also use the public and other university libraries in the city.
8. Student Life
Student life is very lively at ETU. A number of student organizations, such as movie, music, technology, computer, outdoor activites clubs, are established by ETU students and actively work throughout the year. School campus is very close to the center of the city, and museums, theaters, movie theaters, shopping centers, sport clubs welcome all students.There are many tour operators in the city which can take students to many cultural, historical, and touristic places around Turkey.
9. Internationalisation
ETU in its first year applied to Erasmus University Charter and hopes to start relations with major univerties in Europe and establish alliances with International universities soon. Study abroad and exchange programs are also currently being developed. Most ETU faculty has degrees from American and European universities.
10. Language of Instruction
Turkish (Note: All students attend a one-year intensive English preparation program at the beginning of their study unless they pass an English test. Almost all textbooks in most programs at ETU are also in English. Students are required to take secondary foreign language courses starting from 2nd year in French, German, Russian, Italian and/or Spanish).
